WILL-BOT is a small robot, who is afraid of everything. He lives alone on a small planet, which he patrols every day, hoping that nothing unusual will happen. One day a dark spaceship lands on the planet and a dangerous looking giant robot forces WILL-BOT to meet him at a chosen location. All hope seems lost, but is the strange visitor really a friend or a foe?
WILL-BOT "Friend or Foe?" is a 5 minutes short movie that I worked on together with my class during our 4th semester at Truemax Academy in 2011. The movie was produced as a cooperation between Nice Ninja and Truemax Academy and has since it's release been screened at several festivals worldwide. It was my first experience working in a real production pipeline.
My main task on this project was 53 seconds of character animation across 9 different shots. I also modelled the security camera, the door to WILL-BOT's house, the retina scanner next to it, and the head and the arms on WILL-BOT himself. Finally I did a bit of compositing where the sparkling stars in the background and the shooting stars that occurs from time to time, was made by me.
Throughout the production we had our director Kim Hagen and our animation supervisor Tonni Zinck visit us a couple of times. While Kim would teach us in acting, sillhouettes and body language - Tonni tought us about the animation principles and showed us some examples of great animation for inspiration.
This pilot episode is called "Friend or Foe?". Hopefully the stories of Will-Bot will continue in the future - but as for now it is still uncertain. Below are some animatic samples of some of the specific shots that I animated. From storyboard/previz to blocking to final animation.
